A beautiful design can be spoiled by a poor print run. The right packaging printer will help you get the colour, finish and quality you expect, and avoid expensive surprises. These ten questions help you find one.

Ten Questions to Ask a Packaging Printer Before You Commit
In this article

1. What are your minimum order quantities?

Some printers focus on large runs. Others handle small batches. Ask about minimums and how the price changes with quantity, so you can plan stock and cash.

2. How long does it take?

Ask for lead times from approval of final artwork to delivery, and what could delay it. Busy seasons slow everyone down, so ask earlier than you think you need to.

3. Can you provide a physical proof?

A screen preview isn’t a guarantee of colour. Ask whether you get a printed proof, a white sample or a mock-up, and whether it costs extra.

4. How do you handle colour?

Ask how they match brand colours and what tolerance to expect. Provide colour references and make sure they’re used on the real material.

5. What materials and finishes do you offer?

Board, paper, films, foils, embossing, varnishes and window cutouts all change the look and cost. Ask for samples of the combinations you’re considering.

6. What are the sustainable options?

Ask about recyclable and recycled materials, certified sources and how their products are recycled after use. UK rules on packaging are changing, as we explain in UK packaging EPR in 2026. See also sustainable packaging design in the UK.

7. What files and set-up do you need?

Ask for their template, file format, bleed and safe-area requirements. Supply print-ready artwork to avoid delays. Your designer will know what is needed. Our packaging design process explains the steps.

8. What quality checks do you do?

Ask how they check each run and what happens if there’s a fault. Find out about their process for reporting and resolving problems.

9. How are goods packed, stored and delivered?

Ask how the packaging is shipped to you, whether they can store stock, and whether they deliver in stages.

10. Can I speak to a customer like me?

A good printer will be happy to give references from similar projects, in your industry and at your size.

Before you ask

Have your brief ready: the product, quantities, materials in mind, budget and timing. Our packaging design brief template will help.

Compare like with like

Ask each printer to quote for the same specification. Compare the price, the lead time, the proofing and the service, not only the headline cost.

Get design and print working together

The best results come when the designer and printer talk early. If you’re planning a project, see our packaging design agency London page or book a free brand consultation.
