Local SEO Checklist for London Businesses: 15 Steps

London is a busy market. People search for "near me", by borough and by neighbourhood, and the businesses that show up in local results win a lot of customers. Use this 15-step checklist to improve how you appear when people search locally.

Your Google Business Profile

1. Claim and verify it. Your profile is the most important local asset. Make sure you own it and it's verified.

2. Choose the right categories. Pick the main category that best describes your business, then add relevant secondary ones.

3. Complete every section. Description, services, opening hours, contact details, appointment links and attributes. Our Google Business Profile guide goes through each.

4. Add real photos. Your premises, team and work. Update them regularly.

5. Keep hours accurate, including bank holidays and any changes.

Consistency

6. Keep your name, address and phone consistent everywhere. Use the same details on your website, social profiles and listings. Small differences confuse people and search engines.

7. Build quality listings. Add yourself to relevant directories, professional bodies and local business lists. Choose reputable ones over quantity.

Reviews

8. Ask happy customers for reviews. Make it easy with a direct link. Don't offer incentives for reviews, which breaks Google's policies, and never write or buy fake ones.

9. Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and helpfully. It shows you care and helps future customers.

Your website

10. Make your location clear. Show your address, service areas and a map on your contact page, and mention your area naturally on key pages.

11. Create location or service pages where they're genuinely useful. If you serve several boroughs, a page for each can help, but only if each has real, distinct content. Avoid duplicating the same page with a different place name.

12. Add local proof. Case studies, client names and testimonials from nearby customers.

13. Mark up your business. Local business structured data helps search engines understand your details.

14. Check mobile speed and usability. Many local searches happen on phones. See website speed and Core Web Vitals.

Measure

15. Track calls, clicks and directions. Your Google Business Profile shows how many people called, visited your website or asked for directions. Compare it with your enquiries over time.

London-specific tips

  • Be specific about areas. People search by borough or neighbourhood, so mention the places you really serve.
  • Check competitors' profiles. See what categories, photos and reviews top results have.
  • Consider transport and access details, which are common questions for London customers.
  • Watch for duplicate listings if you've moved or changed names.

What not to do

  • Use a fake address or a virtual office to appear in a location you don't serve
  • Stuff your business name with keywords
  • Buy reviews or listings
  • Create dozens of near-identical location pages

These can get your profile suspended and hurt trust.
