SEO for Small Businesses: What to Do in the First 90 Days
A practical 90-day SEO plan for a small business: set up tracking, fix the basics, choose target searches, publish useful content and earn your first links.

SEO takes time, but the first 90 days set the direction. This plan assumes you have a website and not much search traffic yet. It focuses on doing the right things in the right order, without tricks.
In this article
Days 1 to 30: foundations
Set up measurement
- Verify your site in Google Search Console and submit your sitemap
- Set up Google Analytics 4 with your key events, such as form submissions. See conversion tracking in GA4
- Record your starting numbers: clicks, impressions, top pages and enquiries
Fix the technical basics
- Check pages load over HTTPS
- Make sure the site works on mobile
- Test speed and fix the biggest problems. See website speed and Core Web Vitals
- Check Search Console for crawling and indexing issues
- Make sure every important page has a unique title and description
Get clear on who you want to reach
Decide your main services and the customers you want. This is where positioning pays off: clear focus makes SEO easier.
Days 31 to 60: target and build
Choose your target searches
List the searches you want to appear for. Use keyword research and Search Console to find what customers type. Group them by service and intent, and give each important search a page that answers it.
Improve your key pages
For each main service page:
- Use a clear heading that says what you offer and where
- Explain the service in plain language
- Add proof: examples, reviews or case studies
- Answer common questions
- Make the enquiry route obvious
- Link to related pages and guides
Start your Google Business Profile
If you serve a local area, set up and complete your profile. See our Google Business Profile guide.
Days 61 to 90: content and authority
Publish helpful content
Write guides that answer real customer questions. A steady pace beats a rush. Quality, accuracy and genuine usefulness matter more than volume.
Link your pages together
Link new guides to your service pages, and service pages to the guides. This helps people and search engines find everything.
Earn your first links
Links from trustworthy sites are one of the strongest signals. Sensible ways to earn them:
- Business directories and professional bodies relevant to your sector
- Suppliers, partners and clients who can mention you
- Local organisations and chambers of commerce
- Useful research or guides that others want to cite
- Genuine press or podcast appearances
Avoid buying links or using link schemes. They can do more harm than good.
Review your progress
At 90 days, look at which pages are getting impressions, which searches are close to page one and which pages are being ignored. Improve the near-misses first.
What to expect
- Month 1: little visible change. You're building foundations.
- Month 2: more pages appear in search, usually for long, specific queries.
- Month 3: early clicks and enquiries from your best-targeted pages.
Real gains usually take longer. Be wary of anyone promising fast number-one rankings.
Common mistakes
- Chasing difficult, broad searches too early
- Publishing thin or copied content
- Ignoring the enquiry route, so visitors don't convert
- Making constant changes without measuring
- Giving up after a few weeks
Frequently asked questions
How long does SEO take?

Do I need an SEO agency?
Not necessarily at first. The foundations are within reach of most small businesses. An agency helps when you want to go faster or compete in a tough market.
Can you help?
Yes. See our SEO service or book a consultation.
