Brand Strategy Workshop: What to Expect and How to Prepare

A brand strategy workshop is a focused working session where the people who know the business agree what the brand stands for. Done well, it replaces months of opinions with a handful of clear decisions. This guide explains what happens, who should be in the room and how to get the most from it.

What a brand strategy workshop is for

Most businesses have a brand by accident. The founder describes it one way, the sales team another, and customers a third. A workshop puts those views side by side and settles on one. The output is not a poster. It is a set of decisions the design, the website and the marketing can all follow.

The usual decisions are:

  • Who the brand is for, and who it is not for
  • What makes it different from the alternatives
  • Why customers should believe it, meaning the proof
  • How it should sound, which feeds your tone of voice
  • What it stands for, which links to your brand values

Who should attend

Keep the group small, usually between three and eight people. Include the decision-maker, someone who speaks to customers every day, and someone who knows the numbers. A founder alone gives one view. A room of fifteen gives no decisions.

If you can, bring evidence: customer feedback, sales data, reviews, competitor sites and any research you already have.

How long it takes

A single workshop often runs for half a day to a full day. Larger projects use two or three shorter sessions. Shorter sessions work well because people can think between them and test ideas on customers.

What happens in the session

Every agency has its own method, but most follow this shape:

  1. Frame the problem. What is not working, and what should change in the next year?
  2. Look at the customer. Who buys, why, and what nearly stopped them?
  3. Look at the competition. Where do you sound the same, and where is there space?
  4. Find the difference. What can you say that is true, useful and hard to copy?
  5. Draft the position. Write it as a short statement, then test it. See our guide to writing a brand positioning statement.
  6. Agree next steps. Who owns what, and what gets tested before anything is designed.

What you should have afterwards

  • A written positioning statement and a short message hierarchy
  • Agreed audiences and the main reasons to believe
  • A list of decisions, and a list of open questions with owners
  • A clear brief for identity, website or campaign work

If you leave with a good feeling but no written decisions, the workshop has not finished its job.

How to prepare

  • Gather feedback from five real customers, in their own words
  • Write down your three closest competitors and what they say about themselves
  • Decide who has the final say before the session starts
  • Agree that opinions will be tested, not just voted on
  • Block the diary, because interruptions break the thinking

Common mistakes

  • Inviting too many people, so no one dares to decide
  • Skipping the customer evidence and relying on opinion
  • Treating the workshop as the end, not the start of testing
  • Letting the loudest voice win
  • Not writing the decisions down

Workshop or full brand strategy?

A workshop is a good starting point for smaller businesses. A larger project may also need customer interviews, competitor analysis and testing before the workshop. Our guide to what brand strategy is shows how the pieces fit.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a brand strategy workshop cost?

Prices vary with the preparation, the number of sessions and the written output. Ask what is included beyond the session itself, such as research beforehand and a written report afterwards.

Can we run a brand workshop ourselves?

Yes, if someone neutral can lead it and challenge the group. An outside facilitator is useful when views are strongly held or when the founder is too close to the business.

Is a workshop enough to build a brand?

It sets the direction. Identity, website and marketing still need to be designed and built to follow it.

How long before we see results?

The decisions are available straight away. Results show up as the work built on them goes live, and that depends on what you build and how you market it.
