Meta's Reels Trending Ads and Aggregated View Time Explained

Alongside its new Ads Super Burst format, Meta announced two changes that matter to anyone running short video ads: an expansion of Reels Trending Ads, and a measurement test called Aggregated View Time. Both are about showing brands that video attention is worth paying for.

What's new

According to eMarketer's coverage, Reels Trending Ads let advertisers place ads alongside culturally relevant short-form video. Meta is also testing Aggregated View Time, designed to track cumulative viewing time across multiple video exposures. It's in alpha, so it's not generally available.

Why measurement matters

Short video is hard to judge with clicks alone. Someone may watch your ad three times over a fortnight and then search for your name. If you only look at last-click results, that value disappears.

A measure that adds up viewing time across exposures aims to show the cumulative effect of repeated ads. If it works well, it could help advertisers justify brand-led video.

What small businesses should take from it

  • Video is central to Meta's pitch. Expect more tools, and more pressure to produce video.
  • Trends move fast. Placing ads next to trending content can work, but it needs creative that fits the moment and keeps within brand.
  • Attention is a signal, not a sale. A new metric doesn't replace tracking enquiries and customers.
  • Alpha means wait. Don't plan a budget around a test.

What to do

  1. Make video that works without sound, with clear text and a strong opening.
  2. Keep it on brand. Use your tone of voice and visual system, even when you follow a trend.
  3. Track real outcomes. Tag links and record where enquiries come from. See conversion tracking in GA4.
  4. Test small. Run a modest budget on two or three video concepts and keep what performs.
  5. Retarget viewers with a clear next step. Our guide to retargeting ads explains how.

The balance

Brand-building video and direct-response ads work best together. Video builds familiarity, and tracked offers capture people who are ready to act. We explain the relationship in brand marketing vs performance marketing.
