Brand Metrics That Matter for Small Businesses (and Ones You Can Ignore)

Which brand numbers are worth tracking? A practical guide to the metrics that matter for small businesses, the ones to ignore and how to collect them.

There are plenty of numbers you could track about your brand and most small businesses don’t have time for them all. This guide separates the few that matter from the many that don’t, so you can spend your time on decisions rather than dashboards.

The metrics worth tracking

  1. Enquiries and where they come from. The most useful number there is. Ask every new customer how they heard about you.
  2. Branded search. How many people search for your name? Google Search Console shows this for free and it’s a strong sign of awareness.
  3. Direct visits. People who type your address or use a bookmark already know you.
  4. Conversion rate. Of the people who enquire or visit, how many become customers?
  5. Repeat purchase or retention. Do customers come back?
  6. Reviews and ratings. Volume, average score and the words people use.
  7. Referrals. The proportion of new customers who come from recommendations.
  8. Average value. Are customers buying more, or paying more, over time?
Steps: The metrics worth tracking

Metrics to treat with care

  • Followers and likes. Easy to count but they often say little about sales.
  • Impressions and reach. Useful context but not a result.
  • Website visits alone. Look at who visits and what they do.
  • Awards and mentions. Pleasant, but only valuable if they bring customers.

A simple monthly routine

  1. Record the eight numbers in a spreadsheet, once a month.
  2. Compare with the previous month and the same month last year.
  3. Write two sentences about what you notice.
  4. Decide one thing to try next month.

How to collect them

  • Forms and calls: add “How did you hear about us?”
  • Search Console and analytics: both are free
  • Review sites: check once a month
  • Your accounts or booking system: for sales and repeat customers

Add a short survey

Every six months, ask ten customers three questions: How would you describe us? Who else did you consider? What made you choose us? The answers show how people really see you. They’re worth more than most automated reports. Use the same questions each time so you can compare.

Tie numbers to goals

Pick the metrics that match your measurable brand goals. If your goal is to charge more, watch average value. If it’s to be found, watch branded search.

Keep it simple

Three to five numbers you check every month are better than twenty that you never look at. Our guide to brand strategy shows how the numbers fit the bigger picture.
